Standard dimensional vs Rough SawnStandard dimensional lumber and rough sawn lumber differ in several key aspects: ## Processing and Appearance **Rough Sawn Lumber:** - Cut directly from logs with minimal processing - Has a rougher texture and more open fibers - Shows visible saw marks and tool impressions - Retains a rustic, natural appearance **Standard Dimensional Lumber:** - Processed further after initial cutting - Smooth surface with less visible tool marks - Uniform grain and less splintery surface ## Dimensions **Rough Sawn Lumber:** - Measurements are closer to full dimensions - A 1x4 board would measure approximately 1 inch thick by 4 inches wide **Standard Dimensional Lumber:** - Actual dimensions are smaller than nominal size - A 1x4 board typically measures 3/4 inch thick by 3-1/2 inches wide ## Finishing **Rough Sawn Lumber:** - Requires additional work (planing, sanding) for a smooth finish - More versatile for custom projects and finishes **Standard Dimensional Lumber:** - Ready to use with minimal additional processing - Easier to work with for most projects ## Cost and Availability **Rough Sawn Lumber:** - Often less expensive (up to three times cheaper than dimensional lumber) - Typically found at sawmills or specialty lumber yards **Standard Dimensional Lumber:** - More expensive due to additional processing - Readily available at home improvement stores ## Applications **Rough Sawn Lumber:** - Ideal for rustic or exposed wood projects - Suitable for structural builds and framework - More resilient against insects, moisture, and sunlight **Standard Dimensional Lumber:** - Preferred for finished projects requiring smooth surfaces - Easier to use for general construction and woodworking In summary, rough sawn lumber offers a more natural appearance, larger dimensions, and lower cost, but requires more work to finish. Standard dimensional lumber is more processed, smaller in actual size, and ready to use, making it more convenient for many projects despite the higher cost. Looking for rough sawn boards wider than 8 inches? Or a specific size?We sell hardwoods in random lengths and widths, typically 6-8 inches wide and 8-12 feet in length. We don’t find or reserve special sizes anymore. You have to come and pick out what you want yourself from our inventory. Currently, we stock 12 species. Sometimes we have boards in wider widths as they are more resilient to cupping. But almost all domestics are cut to the 6-8 wide FAS grade. 2-inch thick boards are more likely to be wider than 8 inches. We stock- Ash, Cherry, Hard Maple, Jatoba, Sapele, Mahogany, Black Walnut, Rift-sawn white oak, Ambrosia Maple, When available- Purple Heart, Zebra, Padauk.

Special ordering hardwoods, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, & 8/4-Due to the natural characteristics of trees, expectations do not always meet reality. -Trees have limbs which result in knots. -Some trees grow larger than others and so not all sizes are available. - -How a log is milled will determine grain pattern. - Glue ups are usually required for wide widths!
-
What is a board foot?Like a square foot but with volume or thickness. One square foot with a 1-inch thickness is a board foot. 2 inches thick is 2 board feet with the same surface area.

Marine Grade PlywoodWe stock 3 types of marine grade plywood. -Dura-ply by Garnica in 3/4 & 1/2 thickness. Dura-ply is a mold resistant poplar that is light and perfectly assembled with no knots or footballs. -AB Doug Fir, stocking 3/4 & 1/2, is the traditional marine grade plywood used in many boating applications. It is heavier than the dura-ply and not mold resistant. mostly used in a fiberglass scenario where the dura-ply is used in a vinyl or painting scenario. -Aqua ply or pressure treated marine ply, stock 3/4, is not as pretty and is usually used in a situation where it will remain wet for long periods of time without the ability to dry out. an example is when you carpet a pontoon boat. Its important to note that you cannot fiberglass the Aqua-ply.
